Jerusalem â?? City of Collision
Production and use of urban space under the conditions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
An Israeli-Palestinian-European research project
In the summer of 2003, Grenzgeografien brought together for the first time Israeli, Palestinian, and European researchers and students from the fields of architecture and urban design. In a unique trilateral research process, students and experts have investigated the production and use of space within the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Grenzgeografien has since developed into a network that includes partners from the University of the Arts Berlin, Bezalel Academy of Art and Design Jerusalem, the International Peace and Cooperation Centre IPCC, and the ETH Zurich. From August 2003 to May 2005 the project organized five student workshops, numerous lectures, presentations, and field trips, and the international conference "Cities of Collision"? (Jerusalem, November 2004).
Grenzgeografien has produced unique insight into the "conflict urbanism" under which urban spaces in Jerusalem and the everyday practices of its inhabitants are developing. The results of the research process have formed the basis for numerous exhibitions, symposia, and publications, including the book City of Collision-Jerusalem and the Principles of Conflict Urbanism.
